'Hollow Man' - 2 stars : Ultra-cool special effects aren't enough to save this gory sci-fi spectacle, which was directed by 'Basic Instinct' and 'Starship Troopers' helmer Paul Verhoeven. Although better than the 1998 American rehash, this new 'Godzilla' movie is a disappointment, mostly because the battles between the Big G and his foes lack the energy of previous Godzilla tussles. 'Godzilla 2000' - 2 stars : The big fella flattens a Japanese city and battles a giant rock-shaped alien. Jon Turteltaub directs a cast that includes Emily Mortimer and a wonderfully sarcastic Lily Tomlin.
Who better to help him do that than an 8-year-old version of himself? It's as sappy as it sounds. 'Disney's The Kid' - 2 stars : Image consultant Bruce Willis needs to remember what it's like to be a kid again. Bridget Moynahan, Izabella Miko, Maria Bello and Tyra Banks co-star as the other female bartenders who line-dance on the bar, douse themselves with water and pour liquor all over their customers.
Action maven Jerry Bruckheimer ('Gone in Sixty Seconds') produced the cliched comedy/drama featuring amateurish acting, painful dialogue and a plot as spontaneous as the Republican National Convention. 'Coyote Ugly' - 1-1/2 stars : Newcomer Piper Perabo is an aspiring songwriter who heads to New York to strike it rich, but instead lands a job as a barmaid at a nightclub called Coyote Ugly. R (bizarre violence and sexual images, nudity and language). Video auteur Tarsem directed the trippy fantasia, which is much more graphically violent that it needs to be. Part ambitious art-film and part woman-in-peril thriller, the movie looks great but never engages you dramatically. 'The Cell' - 2 stars : Jennifer Lopez plays a therapist who, through some science-fiction technology, enters the mind of a comatose serial killer (Vincent D'Onofrio) in hopes of finding the whereabouts of his last victim. The movie was a huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival and a recipient of 13 Goya - or Spanish Oscar -nominations. 'Butterfly' - 3 stars : Set against the ascent of the fascism in 1936 Spain, this drama from Jose Luis Cuerda tells the sentiment-drenched story of a timid youngster (Manuel Lozano) coming of age with the help of a crusty old villager (Fernando Fernan Gomez). R (violence, adult situations, language). But things don't quite turn out as planned.
The story centers on a cuckolded husband (Dan Hedaya) who hires a killer (M.Emmet Walsh) to off his wife (Frances McDormand) and her new lover (John Getz). 'Blood Simple: The Directors' Cut' - 3-1/2 stars : 'Fargo' filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen have gently tweaked their 1984 masterpiece of tight plotting and low-budget atmosphere to make an even better movie.
